Rapids Of Torne Valley
Rapids of Torne Valley
This sculpture is inspired by the many rapids of the Torne Valley. It is a strange feeling being in the presence of rapids. With immense force and noise, they make their presence undeniable, yet at the same time they evoke a deep sense of calm and serenity, even a stillness despite it’s forthcoming power. Looking out over a rapid, I usually get a feeling of mutual respect.
I aimed to capture this very feeling. Embodying all opposing forces into one sculpture. Emerging like a rapid in motion, the work carries movement as well as stillness, chaos, harmony, strength and a sense of calm.
Technique
The large teapot is made out of stoneware, using a combination of throwing and coiling and then fired at 1250°C in an electric kiln.
The mini teapots, that together make the stream, are each hand thrown on the wheel using porcelain and stoneware. Some are reduction fired at 1280°C in an electric gas kiln, using various celadon and chün glazes. Others are fired in an electric kiln at 1220°C using a transparent glaze.
The sculpture can be presented either suspended from the ceiling or displayed on a podium.
